The “Smart Sharpen” tool is also available, and seems to work pretty well. The “Auto Mask” feature gives bright whites, relatively, a road map, which is handy to have.
A new and unique feature in Lightroom 5 is the ability to “merge” multiple images together to create a high dynamic range (HDR) image. On the surface, at least, it’s not a tool that I am sure I will use much, because it basically requires an image to already be composed and lit properly. However, a single burn or spot in a picture can make the difference between a usable image and a poor one.
Other notable changes include the configurable view at the bottom of the screen. Many options can be disabled or switched on. The crop tool can be used to filter RAW files to only show the region of interest. A new rendering template lets you output HDR images on the spot, and can save you some time and hassle. Temporary files are now created when switching between files and if you’re doing batch processing.
