Broderbund’s next version fixed many of the complaints about the New Print Shop (and the first one on Apple II). The Courier New font was replaced by the original Helvetica font, but most of the other complaints were addressed.
The Ensemble and Journal were added in 1994. Many new features were added, including the ability to mass-import graphics and fonts with copyright-compliant fonts and graphics, the ability to create evental graphics, a built-in dialog book and ziparchive, and the ability to adjust color and contrast settings. It was the first version to support MIDI controllers, and it was the first to support previewing graphics. Color Tiles, a tool that allowed the user to generate custom colorful documents, was added in 1997.
Broderbund claimed that many of the competitors to Print Shop were clones. Broderbund therefore prosecuted many of its competitors for copyright infringement. Some of the cases were settled under undisclosed terms. By the time the case was finally settled, roughly seven companies were left supporting the product, including Aldus, Corel, Macromedia, Viewpoint, and Unison World.
In their defense, Unison World argued that The Print Shop was not copyrightable. The case was decided in favor of Unison World, but results of the ruling were appealed and remanded. The case was retried in the Federal District Court of Chicago in 2002, and the court ruled that The Print Shop was a protectable work in 1993. In 2004, a three-judge panel from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit overturned the ruling of the District Court, holding that the work was not original enough to be copyrighted in 1993.
