On the 10th of January, 2000, a group of robbers come to ���dhishon��� of Khuchcha village ���in the outskirts of Dhanbad ��� of Bihar to ���hijack��� it. After two hours of the robbery, they get into an argument and ���kill��� each other — they ���hijack��� themselves in the process. They ���gain��� from the robbery two thousand rupees and themselves ���gun��� down their ���purse��� owner, Shakil ���Thakur���. The bank’s guard returns soon after and immediately informs this fact in the police. The police leave immediately to investigate and ���tell��� the family of the Thakur that no robbery has been ���committed and ���suggested��� the family that they ���go to any other bank to take money from. Dashrath Manjhi, who runs this bank, immediately arranges for a security guard for the Thakur’s bank, in order to secure it for himself. But this security guard reports to the police and informs them that Manjhi has arranged this guard to secure the bank for him. Knowing Manjhi’s past as a jailor, the police are interested in having a close look at his character. Soon, the police team begin their search, leaving behind a pimp who tries to beat Manjhi. After the search, they understand that Manjhi is on the spot and is a genuine mahatma. Soon, he is also remembered by some robbers who have been arrested for a murder case. Manjhi, however, is asked by them to solve their problems — for free. Manjhi, who at first refuses, finally agrees, but only on his own terms. Shifting the blame and receiving the «protector’s fee» of the group, he forms the group of robbers whose aim is to let off a few more of their fellow robbers. With incredible courage, Manjhi solves these cases by himself. But soon, what he wishes to avoid happens — the police begin to suspect him. They suspect that he is solving these robberies so that
