«Knowledge about long-term climate change adaptation strategies for Mediterranean vineyards is needed in order to improve grapevine physiology and yield-quality attributes. We investigated effects of kaolin-particle film suspension on water relations, photosynthesis and oxidative stress of field-grown grapevines in the Douro region (northern Portugal) in 2012 and 2013. Kaolin-particle film suspension decreased leaf temperature by 18% and increased leaf water potential (up to 40.7% in 2013). Maximum photochemical quantum efficiency of PSII was higher and the minimal chlorophyll fluorescence was lower in the plants sprayed by kaolin. Two months after application, net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance at midday increased by 58.7 and 28.4%, respectively, in treated plants. In the same period, kaolin application increased photochemical reflectance, photosynthetic pigments, soluble proteins, soluble sugars, and starch concentrations, while decreased total phenols and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances. Kaolin application can be an operational tool to alleviate summer stresses, which ameliorates grapevine physiology and consequently leads to a higher yield.» Jeffrey W. It remains unclear whether aphids can be a threat to olive production as they struggle to complete their life cycle. My favorite aphid species to study was the cereal aphid, Sitobion avenae, because it is prevalent in Israel. I immersed cabbage plants in insecticide-free water and exposed 12 aphid colonies to 2 aphid pheromone treatments: live S. avenae males only (live males) and dead S. avenae males only (dead males). Pheromone type did not affect aphid survival rates. On the other hand, all aphid colonies survived significantly longer when larvae were reared on treated plants than on untreated plants. Plant treatment also affected the sex ratio. When aphids were raised on treated plants, only males were produced, other treat-ment produced only females. This study suggests that aphid presence in olive orchards is beneficial and that aphids are unlikely to be a threat to production.» Zivi Selk is reproduced from Oilseeds
