Asserting that the root of suffering and sin are not the things themselves, but our feelings about them, al-Ghazali suggests that if we radically change our feelings about sin, God will be merciful to us. He blames ourselves for our failure to do so, saying that we should have been able to discern God as the “cutting away of self” (see Dukhan al-Amanah). As the source of evil are our emotions, al-Ghazali believes that our feelings should therefore be changed through self purification.
The effectiveness of the Sufi litany lies in the fact that it is a hymnal for everything, i.e. it is a prayer for the poor, for the sick, for the oppressed. It is a prayer for the man who travels from the house of his relatives, the pilgrim on his way to Mecca, the man who goes on a pilgrimage to the tombs of the prophets, for the man who is in the grave, for the man who is vanquished in battle and for the man who is oppressed. The Sufi litany has no other function save to express the gratitude of man to God, thanking Him for his generous descent to his human condition. It transforms all aspects of life to reflect this gratitude and manifest it to the world through prayers (Q&A 156-166). The travails and many disappointments of life no longer cast a shadow on the faith of the believer (Q&A 227-234). With the Sufi litany, the believer thinks of this world that distorts the divine image only as an eye that can be reviewed and taken away. The believer can no longer compare himself to others and become envious or vain, knowing that his life has no importance except in its union with God, for He is the First, and He is the Last, and He is the First and the Last.
An organized form of Sufism has never developed in Islam, but the faith of the Sufis has penetrated into all aspects of social endeavor – in architecture, the arts and sciences, medicine, law, social services and teaching.
