The changes that women have undergone over the past decades have not only impacted the goals and goals of society and the economy, but also affected the conditions of women working in society. The above-mentioned changes, coupled with changing cultural values, has created changes in gender roles (Tahmasur 2005). The purpose of this research is to investigate the changes in the roles of women in Indonesia since the changes. This study is applied to 3 districts selected, namely in the province of West Java, where it was conducted, Indonesia. Local survey using interviews with 50 female subjects from a range of ages and sections of the districts, with gender equalization of 50 to 50 percent to be selected (7 groups 5 female and 5 male). It was found that the performance of women in society, culture, and economy has been changing over time. With changing gender roles, it also has a tendency to change gender mentalities within the family as well. Women’s activities tend to be restricted within the household, and they feel less like they are only able members of society (Daman 2010). The results show that the perceptions of men and women differ and that the role in the family also differs. The role of women within the family is, however, still restricted to fulfilling the duties and responsibility, such as attending to the needs of the family members, disseminating the news, and preparing the soft food. Equally important is the role of marital relations as a wife. The role of women in the household is dependent upon women’s education, which effectively influences their role in society.
As for the roles of women in society, due to the increase in women’s education, female employment has increased remarkably in Indonesia. In 2016, women accounted for nearly 53% of the total workers, and female employment in Indonesia, according to the Labor Agency (BPJS), has increased from 57.4% in 2015 to 59.1% in 2016. This rise in female employment is attributed to increase in private domestic carers, women planning to undertake additional work, especially in the field of health care (BPJS 2016, 2017). Indeed, as women’s education and employment enhance, the entry of women to traditionally male-dominated organizations, including organizations that have a religious nature, is also expected to rise (Ochieng 2006).
