I’ve never released or even released an old game, so I can’t say for sure what factors will make players take notice of a game. But I can tell you what won’t, is feature creep or a bunch of unnecessary features. Kurovadis has a tiny amount of content compared to what I’m working with today, and I could easily agree with you that it’s not a great game.
However, at the end of the day, I can look back at the things I know I did right, such as limiting the tileset to only one, and only one Tileset, taking the easy route, making all the tiles editable, making all the tiles compatible with all the other tiles, and taking a dedicated programmer for development. All these things helped Kurovadis reach the size it is today, a size that could be easily built upon.
This is a source of income for me. I’m investing today to make sure it’s something that can stand on its own if and when I’m not working on it anymore, and I want it to establish itself as an indie game before I have to invest money into it to make it more professional for a bigger audience.
