Poirot is brilliant, valiant, bracingly comic, and infinitely loyal to Catherine (Nancy Price), but his greatest talent is for being true to himself; this is one of the few stories with a protagonist who is not disingenuous about his personality. He’s the kind of guy who gets you to relate to him, that is, until it becomes clear that he’s not being entirely honest about his attitudes toward others. At the same time, his deficiencies are engagingly displayed. His whole life has been a series of mistakes and blunders, his every action tainted by a thick sense of entitlement. Those traits should make him insufferable, but the film loves him for them; Poirot has always been, as William Goldman says in his biographical sketch of him, a man «stuck on the surface of things.» He’s not cut out for fabricating.
