If you’re a professional, you already know what happens when you touch up images. You use the levels and curves tools to get all of your color back into the shadows, and then you apply the Vibrance tool to boost contrast. But in reality, the fourth step is generally the one that kicks off most of the color shifts. The problem? If you have one setting that’s too high, a human face may be totally burned out. Or if you have one setting too low, a photograph may be totally washed out. The anatomy of a face is very much its own thing, and you need to look at the face and the areas of skin that are touching the environment. If you’re using a background that’s so far back that it’s out of focus, the problem can be blown out to an extreme level. If you’re using a light that’s too bright, it can lead to flare. So, if you turn up the brightness on the face, you’ll have to also pull the brightness back on the background. This may mean that your face will indeed be brighter, but not as bright as it was originally.
The useful HSL tool lets you quickly select and apply HSL changes to areas of an image without having to use the transform or mask functions. You simply select which color area you want to change, and you’ll see the slider bar move up or down as you change all 3 components. The same is true of Skin Tone. You can choose from a range of preset skin tones in the Darken, Lift, and Muted tabs or you can choose a different preset in the Adjust tab. The Skin Tone slider also has the same functionality.
