The effigy of an Asura (devil) or a Rakshasa in northern India is typically interpreted as Shiva’s cosmic enemy and the devotees dance around the effigy, in many cases to the accompaniment of live music.[135] This is a relatively new tradition that does not appear to be as ancient as the festival. It may have been created by the Tantric Shaiva and Vaishnava sects to assert themselves in the competitive North Indian ritual landscape.[136][137]
